According to the standards, a pendulum with specified energy (defined by mass, release height, and geometry) is released to impact and fracture the specimen. After fracture, the pendulum rises to a lower height; the difference between the initial and final heights is the key measurement parameter in the impact test and represents the energy absorbed during fracture. The absorbed energy is indicated on the display in Joules.
The SIT-200B impact testing machine features an LCD display and a manual pendulum release mechanism. It is easy to operate, allowing the operator to perform the test and measure the absorbed impact energy efficiently. The pendulum is designed based on the minimum distance between the center of percussion and the line of impact. This dynamic design eliminates lateral forces acting on the bearings during impart and ensures that the pendulum transfers its entire effective energy to the specimen.
After releasing the pendulum and completing 11 oscillation cycles, the following parameters are automatically set using CALIBRATION option in the ‘Panel’ menu:
- Release angle
- Rise angle
- Impact velocity
- Absorbed energy and energy per unit area
- Friction loss (calculated based on 11 full cycles and one half-cycle)
Another feature of the 200 J impact testing machine is the precise design of the frame, anvil, and hammer, which are rigid, stable, and resistant to vibration during testing. The moment of inertia, hammer mass, and center of percussion (COP) – defined as the distance between center of percussion and the axis of rotation – are accurately calculated. The machine design ensures that no shock loads are transmitted to the structure when the hammer strikes the specimen. The striker edge geometry, manufacturing quality, resistance to corrosion and deformation are all carefully considered.
Pendulum impact testing machines – SIT-200 series are used to determine the impact resistance of standard metal specimens. Owing to their economical design, these machines are particularly suitable for university laboratories and educational institutions.
Materials and components are significantly affected when subjected to sudden forces and shocks, and their behavior under such conditions differ markedly from that observed under static loading (such as tensile testing). Resistance to fracture is strongly influenced by material brittleness and ductility (or toughness), which are critical factors, specially at different temperatures.
The impact test is an effective criterion for evaluating and classifying materials – particularly metals – based on their brittle or ductile fracture behavior. Accordingly, impact testing machines have a wide range of applications in research, quality control, and education, including:
- Strength of materials laboratories
- Educational centers
